I recently discovered the EU parliament life video stream. But I found that there is no open standard. They only provide WMV and MPEG4. This sounds weird, because the EU ist struggling for year against Microsofts monopoles in different sectors. But when it comes to the coverage of the heart of the EU they depend on Microsoft technology without alternative. One technology that should be used ist OGG Theora. It would allow everybody, even with free software to watch the debates. It cant be that you are forced to use Windows, just to participate as a citizen of the european union!? A quote from their website:

What formats are available and why?

Two video formats are available:

• WMV (Windows Media Video)
• MPEG-4 (Moving Picture Experts Group)

These two formats both meet the following requirements:

• Streaming: Each event is broadcast in real time, which requires the use of Streaming. Progressive downloading, often used for broadcasting videos on the web, is not sufficient.
• Multilingualism: Each event is broadcast in all the official languages of the European Union (when interpretation is available).
• Simultaneity: Parliament currently broadcasts up to 6 events simultaneously and will soon be able to broadcast up to 13.
• Multi-bitrate: Each event is broadcast in three different qualities to allow access by the largest possible number of citizens, depending on their internet infrastructure.

This sounds good:

I have some good news to announce: Microsoft will be applying the Community Promise to the ECMA 334 and ECMA 335 specs.

ECMA 334 specifies the form and establishes the interpretation of programs written in the C# programming language, while the ECMA 335 standard defines the Common Language Infrastructure (CLI) in which applications written in multiple high-level languages can be executed in different system environments without the need to rewrite those applications to take into consideration the unique characteristics of those environments.

“The Community Promise is an excellent vehicle and, in this situation, ensures the best balance of interoperability and flexibility for developers,” Scott Guthrie, the Corporate Vice President for the .Net Developer Platform, told me July 6.

It is important to note that, under the Community Promise, anyone can freely implement these specifications with their technology, code, and solutions.

You do not need to sign a license agreement, or otherwise communicate to Microsoft how you will implement the specifications.

The Promise applies to developers, distributors, and users of Covered Implementations without regard to the development model that created the implementations, the type of copyright licenses under which it is distributed, or the associated business model.

Under the Community Promise, Microsoft provides assurance that it will not assert its Necessary Claims against anyone who makes, uses, sells, offers for sale, imports, or distributes any Covered Implementation under any type of development or distribution model, including open-source licensing models such as the LGPL or GPL.

But boring old sceptic that I am, I have memories of this:

The Software Freedom Law Center (SFLC), provider of pro-bono legal services to protect and advance free and open source software, today published a paper that considers the legal implications of Microsoft’s Open Specification Promise (OSP) and explains why it should not be relied upon by developers concerned about patent risk.

SFLC published the paper in response to questions from its clients and the community about the OSP and its compatibility with the GNU General Public License (GPL). The paper says that the promise should not be relied upon because of Microsoft’s ability to revoke the promise for future versions of specifications, the promise’s limited scope, and its incompatibility with free software licenses, including the GPL.

That was then, of course, what about now? Well, here’s what the FAQ says on the subject:

Q: Does this CP apply to all versions of the specification, including future revisions?

A: The Community Promise applies to all existing versions of the specifications designated on the public list posted at /interop/cp/, unless otherwise noted with respect to a particular specification.

Now, is it just me, or does Microsoft conspicuously fail to answer its own question? The question was: does it apply to all versions *including* future revision? And Microsoft’s answer is about *existing* versions: so doesn’t that mean it could simply not apply the promise to a future version? Isn’t this the same problem as with the Open Specification Promise? Just asking.

Mi piace l’entusiasmo della comunità: Microsoft ha promesso  (contratto vincolante) che non farà causa a chi usa MONO.

In un comunicato, tutto a riguado di C# e CLI (ECMA 334 e 355) si è chiarito.

Resta qualcosina di incerto (Winforms, ad esempio non è presente nelle specifiche), ma fin qui notizia straordinaria.

Ci possiamo fidare?

Il Software Libero è il
software che mette l’utente in grado di controllare i propri computer e
dispositivi. Al contrario, il Digital Restriction Management è una
tecnologia par mettere l’utente sotto il controllo di terzi fornitori di
materiali audiovisivi o testuali. Questi due fini appaiono
fondamentalmente incompatibili per FSFE.

Ma non è solamente FSFE a vedere problemi con il DRM. La società tedesca
per le scienze informatiche (”Gesellschaft für Informatik”) dice: “Se il
DRM prevalesse sul mercato, allora gli utenti perderebbero il controllo
dei loro computer” [1]. Symantec condivide questa opinione: “Come
risultato, i clienti di tutto il mondo perderanno la possibilità di
scegliere le soluzioni per la sicurezza che vogliono usare sui propri
sistemi operativi, e saranno costretti ad utilizzare quelle soluzioni
offerte o permesse da Microsoft” [2].

Questa perdita di controllo significa che case editrici, stazioni TV,
governi (incluse le loro amministrazioni), banche, società produttrici ed
individui, perderanno il controllo non solo sulle loro schede grafiche,
monitor e dischi, ma anche sui loro cellulari, fotocamere digitali e
qualsiasi altra periferica digitale che in teoria dovrebbe essere in loro
possesso.

Nonostante FSFE sia convinta che non ci sia nessun motivo legittimo per
cui una società costruita sulla libertà e la democrazia dovrebbe
considerare giusto che qualcuno metta l’uso personale di computer e
dispositivi sotto il controllo di terze parti, siamo costretti a
riconoscere che ampi provvedimenti legislativi sono stati adottati in
tutto il mondo proprio a questo scopo.

Per questo motivo consideriamo necessaria una revisione di trattati
internazionali e leggi come TRIPS, DMCA, EUCD e altri, e cercheremo di
farlo nelle sedi adeguate, nonostante sia un compito difficile e
probabilmente non di rapido successo.

Conoscendo la tabella di marcia che comporta e assumendo che le
tecnologie DRM non scompariranno in breve tempo, abbiamo anche una serie
di obiettivi legislativi di breve-medio termine:

• Segnali di avvertimento di DRM sui prodottiAi consumatori dovrebbe essere data una giusta possibilità di non
  comprare accidentalmente prodotti che li incatenino al controllo di
  terze parti. Per poter prendere decisioni consapevoli, essi
  dovrebbero ricevere le informazioni necessarie al momento

• Permettere l’aggiramento delle misure DRM per scopi legaliL’uso legale di computer e dispositivi personali non dovrebbe mai
  diventare illegale. Ma questo è proprio l’effetto ottenuto da alcuni
  provvedimenti “anti-aggiramento”: operazioni permesse dalla legge
  diventano illegali, non per l’operazione in sè, ma per l’aggiramento
  necessario per esercitare un proprio diritto.
• Nessun DRM nel contesto della politicaI governi devono mantenere il pieno e sovrano controllo dei propri
  dati, procedure e decisioni. Un utente di software con DRM, inclusi i
  governi, non potrà mai avere il pieno controllo sui propri computer.
  Per questa ragione i sistemi DRM non devono avere spazio all’interno
  della politica.
• Servizi pubblici per tuttiI servizi pubblici dovrebbero essere disponibili a tutti i cittadini,
  inclusi quelli che fanno uso di
  Software Libero. Dovrebbe
  quindi essere obbligatorio fornire sempre un modo per accedere a
  servizi e informazioni pubbliche tramite Software Libero.

Debian’s decision to include Mono in the default installation, for the sake of Tomboy which is an application written in C#, leads the community in a risky direction. It is dangerous to depend on C#, so we need to discourage its use.

The problem is not unique to Mono; any free implementation of C# would raise the same issue. The danger is that Microsoft is probably planning to force all free C# implementations underground some day using software patents. (See http://swpat.org and http://progfree.org.) This is a serious danger, and only fools would ignore it until the day it actually happens. We need to take precautions now to protect ourselves from this future danger.

This is not to say that implementing C# is a bad thing. Free C# implementations permit users to run their C# programs on free platforms, which is good. (The GNU Project has an implementation of C# also, called Portable.NET.) Ideally we want to provide free implementations for all languages that programmers have used.

The problem is not in the C# implementations, but rather in Tomboy and other applications written in C#. If we lose the use of C#, we will lose them too. That doesn’t make them unethical, but it means that writing them and using them is taking a gratuitous risk.

We should systematically arrange to depend on the free C# implementations as little as possible. In other words, we should discourage people from writing programs in C#. Therefore, we should not include C# implementations in the default installation of GNU/Linux distributions, and we should distribute and recommend non-C# applications rather than comparable C# applications whenever possible.

Ecco il punto: volevo che wordpress mi mostrasse solo un breve estratto degli articoli.
Per fare questo non è necessaria chissa quale abilità, wordpress integra già questa funzione: basta andare in Aspetto>Editor>index.php, sostituire the_content() con the_excerpt() e salvare.

Il problema è che per leggere l’articolo intero bisogna cliccare sul titolo, niente di male, ma a me piace il link more.

De gustibus non disputandum est.

Per porre rimedio a questo “problema” ho installato il plugin re-reloaded excerpt con la solita procedura.

Per abilitarlo bisogna sostituire a the_content una delle seguenti stringhe:

Wordpress has a built-in excerpt feature. To enable it you’ve to edit your index.php (wp-admin>Appearance>Editor) changing the_content() in the_excerpt.
But this doesn’t show the “more” link: to view the full post you’ve to clic on its title.
But I want the link “more”.
Google-ing a little bit, i found re-reloaded excerpt.

Hot to use it?

Install it as any other wp plugin and then replace the_content with one of the following strings:

Le pendrive oggi sono molte diffuse, se ne trovano in tutte le salse e dimensioni, il loro successo è stato decretato da praticità e velocità. Allora perché non usarle per installare(o anche utilizzare) Linux?

Creare una penneta bootabile con la distro preferita è semplicissimo con UNetBootin!

1. Scarichiamo il software ed avviamolo, si presenterà la seguente schermata:
   
2. Da qui scegliamo distro e versione dalle tendine alla voce Distribution.
3. Clicchiamo su Ok ed attendiamo la fine delle operazioni

La tua pendrive è pronta: per avviarla è necessario settare l’avvio da USB nel bios (supportato solo da bios recenti).

Se la tua distro non è presente in elenco o se hai già scaricato l’immagino da masterizzare (la ISO) puoi sceglere quella come Disk Image!

Oggi ho riorganizzato un po’ il mio PC.

Il mio hp ha due hard disk da 160 gb, ho scelto di dedicarne uno a Vista+XP (purtroppo ogni tanto sono costretto ad usare windows) ed uno a GNU/Linux.

Da utonto ho optato per Ubuntu: la uso da tempo e l’ultima versione funziona egregiamente out-of-the-box.

Installata in una manciata di minuti (installazione da pendrive, ne parlerò nel prossimo articolo), procedo al riavvio.

Sgradevole sorpresa: grub non c’é! L’installer l’ha messo sull’mbr dell’hd secondario, come spostarlo?

Per foruna, l’operazione è semplicissima!

1. Avviamo la distro in modalità live
2. da terminale:
   sudo grub-install --root-directory=/media/disk/boot /dev/sda
   dove /media/disk è la mia partizione di sistema (quella da avviare, che contiene la sottodirectory boot)

   /dev/sda è invece il disco rigido primario.

3. Riavviamo ed ecco il nostro GRUB!

Today I reinstalled Ubuntu on my computer.

I have a laptop with two hard-disks, so I decided to install Windows on the primary hd and GNU/Linux on the second one.

About 25 minutes and “installation completed”, but grub isn’t there! Why?

The installer puts GRUB on the mbr of the disk in which you’re installing Ubuntu (the second one in my case)

To boot GNU/Linux I need to put GRUB on the primary hd: let’s see how!

1. Boot your live distro from its cd or pendrive
2. Open the terminal and write this command sudo grub-install --root-directory=/media/disk /dev/sda
   where /media/disk is the system partition (the folder with the “boot” subdirectory) and /dev/sda is the primary disk.
3. Now reboot the system, our beloved GRUB is here!
